The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) is a membership organisation with over 1800 members in the United Kingdom. It is the largest of the dental specialist groups and dates back nearly a century to the formation of the British Society for the Study of Orthodontics. Other orthodontic groups were founded in the over the years and in 1994 they all came together to create the British Orthodontic Society. The BOS describes itself as being dedicated to promoting the study and practice of orthodontics, maintaining and improving professional standards and encouraging education and research in the specialism. Members of the society are entitled to discounts for BOS events, such as the annual British Orthodontic Conference, which is one of the best-attended events in the dental calendar. Members also receive the BOS news and the ''Journal of Orthodontics'' as part of their membership subscription. In 2011 a small breakaway group set up a reformed BSSO group as they felt the BOS was not fulfilling its charitable aims as they wished. This however has only led to one or two resignations from the society and the vast majority of members support the aims of the society and feel that the unification of the old societies has benefitted patients as has pooling resources and speaking with one voice. The unified Society is far greater than the sum of the individual societies.
